"As we skated off the ice after the last game, I stopped for one more look around that old barn. I realized that never in my life would I be prouder or have more respect for a group of men that I did at that moment."

Gary Bergman
Team Canada # 2

Gary Bergman was a strong experienced NHL defenseman known for his reliable but not flashy performance on the ice. His skill set included very fine body-checking and impressive shot-blocking. Bergman wasn’t an offensive blueliner and his experience was often underestimated in favor of more spectacular blueliners. He was rather a traditional NHL defense player of that time preferring to contribute to his team efforts with what he did the best - an extremely steady and solid play in defense.

PERFORMANCE IN THE 1972 SUMMIT

"Right away I realized what a classy guy he was in how he handled himself on and off the ice, and what a great competitor he was. He had a lot of confidence in his ability and wasn't worried about how he was going to play. He just went out and played. He was as solid a defenceman as has ever played the game."

Bred Park, Team Canada 1972

"He was a rock."

Bobby Orr

Gary Bergman demonstrated a very reliable performance at the Summit. He was named as Team Canada's MVP in Game 6 and played in all 8 games of the Series earning 3 assists and a solid "plus 5".
